This week I foraged for food; food to provide my body with energy for healing. To be exact, I drove out onto backcountry roads and met with an old man. A man wise to the energetic requirements that the human body needs to thrive; needs encompassing not only calories but also connection with each other, with the Earth, and with its inhabitants.

A Farmer, A Butcher, A Provider of Food and A Face Seen

The old man was a farmer and a butcher. He knew his animals, he knew what his animal ate and he knew the food that his animals provided. He said that the meat he provided actually tasted like meat, and it did.

I saw the pigs, sheep, cattle, turkeys, and ducks ranging happily in the fields. I saw the slaughterhouse next to the fields. There were no trucks transporting animals for miles across the country. There were no feedlots. The paddocks were green and abundant.

The greatest pleasure was that I saw the old man’s face. We were out in the country on private property. He warmly shook my hand. The corners of his mouth crinkled, along with his eyes as he spoke of human and animal health. We connected over the health of the planet and its inhabitants.
